Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says the Gunners are still “far from” the standards set by Manchester City, despite increasing their lead over the Premier League champions to five points.

After the dramatic late win over Manchester United on Sunday, Arteta was asked about his team’s title credentials but he evaded the question and pointed out that his team has a way to go to match the quality of Pep Guardiola’s side:

“I don’t have an opinion [on the title race]. It can be a perception. I know my team so well, I know where we are, I know why we are here and I know where we want to be and we are far from that. I know the levels of the other teams and one especially that has won in the last five or six years [City] and we are not there yet.”

City know they have to put a winning run together if they are to overhaul Arteta’s men at the top of the table. Their rivals can go eight points clear if they win their game in hand, but their squad does lack experience.

As Arteta points out, City are serial winners and they have the ability to overhaul the Gunners if they play to their best level. However, the major question is whether they have the desire to do it anymore.

Guardiola has raised doubts about the squad’s hunger in recent matches and he clearly feels that the mentality of the team will have to change if they are to finish top again.
