Ex-Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas believes Manchester City should consider Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a potential alternative to Harry Kane.
At the time of writing, the Citizens have not made a breakthrough in their discussions with Spurs for the England captain and Nicholas says Aubameyang would be a logical alternative who is just as capable of scoring goals:
“They could go for someone like Aubameyang. It looks like something is going wrong at Arsenal at the moment, and we do know Aubameyang scores goals, he’s got pace and he’s got movement. I prefer him on the left, but I could see something like that materialise, it gives Manchester City a cheaper option. He’s not as good as Kane, but he’s as good a finisher as Kane.”
It is an interesting suggestion from Nicholas. There are murmurings coming out of the Emirates that Aubameyang could be sold for the right price, and he would definitely be substantially cheaper than Kane.
The Gabonese international also has experience of playing in a high pressing system, under both Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund. However, after saying all that, while he is an excellent scorer, his form has dipped alarmingly over the last twelve months, and the fact that he is now 31 years of age would make him a stop-gap rather than a long-term solution.
