Manchester City have turned down the opportunity to sign Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes that would have seen the teenager join the club at the end of next season, according to reports in Portugal.

It is believed that Sporting were willing to lower their price for the 18-year-old as long as the defender was allowed to stay with the Primeira Liga champions for one more year.

However, City are not interested in such a proposal. Mendes’s valuation is thought to be €60m (£52m), with Sporting reportedly looking for another €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons, but that is a sizeable figure, considering the Portuguese international’s lack of experience.

Negotiations between the Citizens and Sporting are believed to be continuing in order to work out a compromise. Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid are all said to be keen on the fullback too so we shall see if others do get involved in the battle to sign the player.
