Foden reveals what he said to Haaland after Man City vs Dortmund

Phil Foden has disappointing news for Manchester City fans hoping he was trying to persuade Erling Haaland to join the Blues this summer, when he was spotted talking to the Borussia Dortmund striker after their Champions League game at the Etihad.

Haaland is the subject of plenty of transfer rumours linking him to Europe’s biggest clubs, including City, as a result of his devastating record for Dortmund over the last two years.

Pep Guardiola wouldn’t be drawn on any questions about Haaland’s future ahead of City’s Champions League quarter-final meetings with Dortmund, where the Norwegian was mostly kept quiet by Ruben Dias as the Blues progressed.

Nevertheless, when Foden was spotted chatting with Haaland after the full time whistle of the first leg at the Etihad, fans were hoping that ‘Agent Phil’ was trying to persuade him to join City in the summer.

The pair knew each other previously, though, and unfortunately for City fans they weren’t speaking about their futures as they walked off the pitch.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Foden revealed what was discussed, saying: “Am I allowed to say? We were just talking about he missed a few chances in that game, so it was a chat in general about the game and the result.

“It was nothing too special, a lot of people thought it was about other things. It was just about the game in general.”

Other answers given by Foden in the interview saw him reveal that he would take Lionel Messi fishing, and that Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante has been his toughest opponent he has faced in his career.

As for his most talented rival, Foden said: “I’d have to say Neymar in the first leg [of the Champions League semi-final] in the first half. I was a bit starstruck at times. Just some of the little flicks he was doing. I had to keep professional.

“He’s unbelievable what he does every game, he decides the game on his own sometimes. One of the best players in the world.

“It can get frustrating, it’s very hard to even get near him. I thought we coped really well in the second half onwards to deal with him, him and Mbappe obviously two special talents. It was massive, important to get the job done.

“I asked Neymar for this shirt and he very kindly gave it to me. I’m going to get it framed. I’m sure he’s got many better players than mine, I don’t think he needs to.”

And Foden also revealed he discovered that City won the league at the driving range – but that his phone died just as United were losing to Leicester in the result that sealed the title for the Blues.

“I was at the golf range smacking a few balls, my phone died, I got it on charge and we’d won the league. I got to City, we had a bit of a party, I was buzzing. I didn’t seem to drink, everyone had a good time, we got a few pizzas delivered. It was nice to let go after a tough year.”
