BBC journalist Guillem Balague is adamant that Manchester City and Liverpool are currently playing out the “best” rivalry in the history of the Premier League.

Some have argued that it lacks the edge of previous battles between the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal in the late 90s to early 00s, or United’s clashes with Chelsea, but Balague believes the quality of the two current teams is very important:

… two (intelligent, versatile) teams at the pick of their powers in two different styles, high quality in everything that happens, always goals

Wonderful spectacle today before, during and after the match

Whether it is or isn’t the greatest rivalry shouldn’t really be that important. It should be enjoyed no matter what. On the whole, City have come out on top, more often than not, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the spectacle of some incredible matches between the two sides over the last four years.

These teams have set new standards for what is required to win trophies in English football and they have pushed each other on to greater heights. It’s likely to be a rivalry that will be appreciated more when some time has gone by.
