Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is likely to be named captain by Norway if Martin Odegaard can’t prove his fitness ahead of Saturday’s match against Slovenia.

The Arsenal playmaker sat out the Gunners’ win against Brentford at the weekend with a calf strain and national team coach Stale Solbakken has revealed Haaland is in line to put on the armband if the midfielder is unavailable.

Speaking about his relationship with Haaland, Solbakken says the player is “gradually” becoming a leader in the dressing room, although he feels that communication with his striker could be improved:

“He is one of my vice captains, so sometimes we need to keep in touch a little bit more. Gradually he has grown into that role. When we started it was a little bit difficult because of the pandemic and we couldn’t meet. I was appointed in the middle of all that so it was difficult in the beginning for him to know how to express himself in that role. He is a team player, you can see that on his face.”

It is easy to forget that Haaland is still only 22 years of age, but the ability he possesses means he was always going to captain his country at some point.

The forward has had a stunning start to his Manchester City career, bagging 14 goals in all competitions, and he will be hoping to continue that great form when playing for Norway this week.
