Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has refused to be drawn on whether he will stay at the Etihad beyond the end of the season.

The German international’s contract expires next June and, when asked about his future at a pre-match press conference, he stated that nothing has been decided yet:

“I am very happy at Manchester City. I was all the time I’m at the club. It’s football, it’s business, we will see what happens at the end of the season.”

Gundogan can speak to foreign clubs about signing a pre-contract agreement in just 16 weeks’ time so it does look like he may be intending to leave on a free transfer.

There is a possibility that he could join his former City teammates, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, at Arsenal with Fabrizio Romano having reported all the way back in May that the Gunners were keeping tabs on the midfielder’s situation.

As Gundogan has said himself, though, he has very much enjoyed his time at City and it might just be the case that there is a dispute over the length of the contract extension. He does turn 32 next month and the Premier League champions may only be offering a short-term deal.
