Joleon Lescott has warned his former club Manchester City that Chelsea’s victory in the Champions League final can propel them into Premier League contention next season.
Pep Guardiola‘s side were unable to secure a treble and the first Champions League victory in the club’s history, with Kai Havertz’s first-half effort settling the tie in Porto.
That result saw Thomas Tuchel guide Chelsea to a trophy just months after he took the reins from Frank Lampard and marks his third consecutive victory over Guardiola.
Now, Lescott believes the result should serve as a warning to City for the defence of their league title next season.
Who will be Manchester City’s biggest rivals for the Premier League? Let us know in the comments below.
“If you look at the squads, Chelsea’s is arguably as good as City’s, it’s strong in every position,” he told BT Sport.
“When you win competitions like this, it just binds the team together, they’ll have so much togetherness for next season, coming back with so much confidence.
“Yes, they’ll go away and represent their countries in the Euros, but next season, the confidence this brings will be immense.”
