De Zerbi’s side went up against Manchester City on Wednesday evening, with Phil Foden and Julio Enciso scoring first-half goals in the eventual 1-1 draw. The Seagulls booked their place in next season’s Europa League on the back of the point, with De Zerbi’s stock as a coach continuing to rise.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk chief replaced Graham Potter back in September, with the style of football he has imposed at the Amex Stadium earning him plenty of plaudits. Guardiola, in the build-up to the midweek clash, sung De Zerbi’s praises – hailing him as ‘one of the most influential managers in the last 20 years’.
Positive John Stones injury update
Rodri does not believe John Stones’ precautionary substitution at Brighton will give Manchester City another injury concern, despite the champions’ mounting list of absentees.
City travelled to Brighton without Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Manu Akanji and Jack Grealish as they were not fully fit after the Premier League title was confirmed last weekend, before Phil Foden was substituted after a knock early in the second half. Defender Stones followed soon after appearing to pick up a knock of his own, and Pep Guardiola confirmed both had injury concerns.
With Stones as the only fully fit defender to pick at Brighton, Rodri partnered him in central defence, and the midfielder offered an update of his own when asked about Stones’ injury.
