Ruben Dias’ first season in England has ended with more deserved individual recognition as the FWA Footballer of the Year was also named the Premier League’s Player of the Year for the 2020/21 campaign.
The central defender has already gone a long way to justifying the huge £62m transfer fee paid for him by Manchester City to Portuguese giants Benfica last summer, as his performances helped City to win back the Premier League title from Liverpool.
Dias formed an impressive partnership with England international John Stones and has shown leadership qualities well beyond his experience, as he was constantly vocal at the heart of City’s defence.
He beat a number of other leading Premier League talents to the award, including the likes of City teammate Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester United starlet, Bruno Fernandes, and the league’s top scorer and top creator, Harry Kane.
He’s received praise from football experts all over the football community, and many even believe he has earned the right to be labelled as the world’s best defender – at least in his position – especially after Virgil Van Dijk was sadly injured for a large part of the campaign.
The award caps off a sensational debut campaign as Dias’ side claimed another domestic double and reached the Champions League Final in Porto.
The Portuguese international now looks nailed on for a starting spot at Euro 2020 and has a realistic chance of helping his country retain the title they won five years ago in France.
