Pep Guardiola issues Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden updates as they make Man City returns

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has addressed Kevin De Bruyne’s and Phil Foden’s returns to the matchday squad ahead of this afternoon’s clash against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Aside from De Bruyne playing the final 11 minutes of the opening day defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last month, the midfield duo have played no part in City’s opening three Premier League fixtures, both struggling with ankle injuries.

However, the international break appeared to come at a good time for both of them, with the pair having been able to step-up their recoveries in recent weeks and now force their way back into the matchday squad.

Speaking yesterday, Guardiola hinted that De Bruyne would be involved against the Foxes, but appeared to be a lot more coy on Foden’s chances, with the England international, who has not played since the semi-final of the European Championship more than two months ago, having only just returned to full training.

Nevertheless, the pair have made the bench this afternoon and Guardiola has conceded that De Bruyne is in better shape than Foden, but everyone within his first-team ranks is now available.

“We have 18 players in the first-team and everybody is available right now and I think Kevin is a little bit better in terms of physical condition,” Guardiola said ahead of kick-off.

“Phil just made one training session but it’s good to be together again and start to be excited about the dynamic of the group.”

Guardiola, though he has welcomed De Bruyne and Foden back into the fold, has named the exact same starting line-up for the third game in succession, as City go in search of a third successive victory, after the back-to-back 5-0 triumphs over both Norwich City and Arsenal prior to the international break.
