Yangel Herrera will spend another year in La Liga after agreeing to move to Espanyol for the rest of the 2021/22 season.
Herrera is yet to feature for Manchester City despite signing for the club in January 2017, having been loaned first to sister club New York City for 18 months before spending six months at Spanish second division side Huesca and then two years with top-flight Granada where he helped them qualify for the Europa League and then progress to the quarter-finals of the competition last year.
Those performances saw the Venezuelan midfielder attract interest from a host of clubs this year, and City were open to selling the player for around £20m. However, with no permanent move agreed Herrera will instead head to Espanyol on a temporary deal before returning to the Etihad at the end of the campaign.
Espanyol are back in La Liga after winning promotion at the first attempt following relegation in 2020. They have had a winless start to their season, taking one point from three games, and play champions Atletico at home on Sunday.
Herrera is set to be the most high-profile move at City on what has been a typically quiet deadline day. Tommy Doyle has gone on loan to HSV in the German second division, while Philippe Sandler and Patrick Roberts could yet move before the window closes but Pep Guardiola’s first team squad is expected to stay exactly how it started the day.
