Zack Steffen to miss remainder of USA’s international break

Zack Steffen has been replaced by Sean Johnson in the US men’s national team, just days after suffering an injury setback on international duty with Gregg Berhalter’s side.

Steffen has made 23 appearances for his national side but has yet to feature since their CONCACAF Nations League final win over Mexico, earlier this year.

The positive result comes as the latest blow in his attempts to establish himself as Berhalter’s number one as he was forced to miss their last match against El Salvador after complaints of back spasms.

And the bad string of luck continues as he is replaced by New York City FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson and will not travel to their final game of the international break.

America are gearing up for their final two Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers as they host Canada on Monday before they face Honduras on Thursday.

A statement released by US Soccer read: “U.S. Soccer has confirmed that goalkeeper Zack Steffen has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not travel to Honduras for the U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup Qualifier on Sept. 8 in San Pedro Sula. He will be replaced on the roster by Sean Johnson.

“Steffen’s positive result was confirmed through rigorous serial testing in accordance with U.S. Soccer’s COVID-19 protocols.

“After his initial positive result, Steffen was isolated and contact tracing was initiated by U.S. Soccer’s medical staff.

“His positive result was confirmed with additional testing that was completed today. In addition to Steffen, one other member of the delegation also tested positive and has undergone the same protocol.

“All potential contacts – players and staff – have tested negative in multiple tests since Steffen’s initial positive result and are cleared to participate.”

As per the requirements in the US, Steffen will need to self-isolate for 10 days meaning he will miss the trip to the King Power Stadium and may be a doubt for the Champions League opener against RB Leipzig.
